Felipe: Thank you for your time, I confess a fan. So many thanks
HellLight: Hi there, thank you for this opportunity to say a little bit about HellLight.
Felipe: Can you make an introduction to the band: Members, path and albums
HellLight: HellLight is a Brazilian Funeral Doom Metal band and it´s been around since 1996, we are going to be 20 years next year.
We are 4 people...me, Fabio De Paula, the guitarist and vocalist; Alexandre Vida, the bassist; Rafael Sade, the Keyboardist and Renan Bianchi, the drummer.
We are now releasing our 5th album, “Journey Through Endless Storms”
Felipe: Whenever it becomes obnoxious and unwise to define the sound of a band ¿How to define you the sound of HellLight?
HellLight: We are normally defined as Funeral Doom Metal, and we are ok with that, however, I think we, sometimes, mix some other kinds of metal in our songs.
Felipe: What musical groups could you establish as an influence when HellLight was formed and what are the groups that each of the members are considered elementary?
HellLight: I would say, Black Sabbath, Danzig, Bathory, Candlemass; as you can see, there was no Funeral Doom bands influencing us when we were defining the band. We are all metalheads, the Funeral Doom came out naturally, when we started the band, we were trying to make a sound that could express some feelings and emotions that could only be translated with slow and deep music, and so, the Funeral Doom nailed it.
Felipe: What albums are you listening right now? What Brazilian groups could recommend?
HellLight: I really liked the Doom:vs new album, it sounds amazing, and the songs are really deep. I also loved the new Shape of Despair album, amazing too.
We do have many great bands here in Brazil. Mythological Cold Towers, Imago Mortis, Abske Fides, Eternal Sorrow, there´s many more, they are all great bands
Felipe: ¿Are you aware of American and Global Doom scene? ¿What bands highlight of each scene?
HellLight: We actually don´t hear much about north American Doom Metal bands, only the big ones such as Solitude Aeturnus. I think the scene are much greater in Europe, we have many many more fans in Europe than in USA. I must say that in Central and South America, especially in Brazil, the scene is growing a lot and it´s very important for us.We are having sold out shows and sold out merchandise. It´s been great.
We are planning to make a small tour in South America, as soon as possible.
Felipe: ¿Have you had a chance to play outside Brazil? ¿Any real possibility of coming to Chile and play in the near future?
HellLight: Not yet, however, we have booked a tour in Russia next year the first 2 weeks of April. It´s going to be great, 12 shows in 15 days.
We would love to play in Chile, I think Chile is an amazingly beautiful country, with many metalheads, it´s definitely something we are going to do soon. We would, for sure, accept invitations to make shows there.
Felipe: You announce that you will take a tour of South America. When would it be done this tour? Would you come to Chile?
HellLight: I don´t know exactly when it´s gonna happen, but I believe it will take place in the end of 2016 or in the beginning of 2017, and we are definitely going to Chile, it´s the one place I am looking forward to play in South America.
Felipe: Metal boils in South America, but it seems that being away from the major economic centers affects and slows the scene. How to build a distinctly South American scene?
HellLight: Rafael, the keyboardist, has a small show producer we, normally, make 3 or 4 festivals every year. Some of it, just with Doom bands and some with every kind of metal bands. We try to make things happening here it can never stop. This is how we contribute with the scene.
Felipe: The quality of your compositions, complex sensations that transmit and evocative music composing suggests that should be quite difficult to build a HellLight album. Who makes the major responsibility of the composition?
HellLight: Usually, I´m the one that makes the compositions. It starts with some idea I have in the guitar. I usually record it and send it to Rafael and Alexandre to listen and put the bass and keyboards on it. So we get to the studio to rehearse the song. Once it´s ready, I write the lyrics, grunt and clean vocals.
Felipe: The lyrical element is another basic point. What aspects, situations and experiences come together at the time of writing?
HellLight: As we are all pagans in the band, we always tries to express the pagan points of view on the lyrics. How we see the world, how we face the problems in life, the way we get thru emotions, feelings, tragedies in life.
The lyrics have mostly very emotive content; they are mostly sad and serious.
I think HellLight art as one; the music, the lyrics, the photograph, the booklet art, everything must match, so the lyrics are very similar to the music.
Felipe: What is wanting to live life playing Doom in Brazil? If you could detail how the daily lives of the members of HellLight to get an idea of the complexity of your lives? Do any of you study, work on something besides music, they have families? Have you been able to pursue a career related to music or is it just too impossible?
HellLight: We all work with music in different ways. Me and Alexandre work as luthiers, we make and repair music instruments, we have a guitar repair shop and we do work there during the week. Also Alexandre is a school teacher, he used to teach geography.
Renan, the drummer works in a studio, the same one we rehearse with HellLight, in fact, we met him there, and Rafael has this small metal show producer. So, as I said, we live music 24/7.
Felipe: HellLight is about to celebrate 20 years of musical career, but it seems that you are not embedded in the massive, however, in the underground you have a name already earned and respected. How to appreciate this sort of dichotomy?
HellLight: We do not keep in mind to get to mainstream or something like it, the things comes naturally for us, in fact, Funeral Doom Metal was never in the mainstream. We really don´t care about it. Our songs have, at least, 10 minutes, and we do not intend to change it, it´s never going to classify as mainstream. But, I really think that the real fans are in the underground, we have the best fans in the world. They know your songs, the lyrics, the meaning behind it, it´s impressive.
Also, I think the internet made the underground much bigger. 15 years ago, the underground bands had only fans around the neighborhood, nowadays, it´s worldwide.
Everyday I get emails from fans all around the world, sometimes, from countries I never heard of which is an amazing experience.
Felipe: Does any member of HellLight a side project?
HellLight: I think I´m the only one with a side project right now, it´s called Legion of Nexus and I released an album in april, it´s free to download in the facebook page. It´s funny that, in 20 years of HellLight, sometime it´s normal to compose some songs that doesn´t fit in HellLight´s albums, so when I got 10 songs, I decided to record those songs and release them, even if it´s was for free downloading. I turn out great, and many people loved the album. I might do another one sometime.
Felipe: How has the response of the fans and the press specialized to respect your work published? I personally place HellLight among all groups of elite in the global scene of Doom.
HellLight: I think we are very lucky, we do have a great relationship with the media, especially since we get to be in the cast of Solitude Productions Record label. I do not recall the last time we get a bad review. I know we have a lot to improve, but, as I said, we are lucky with the press.
Felipe: Are you working on new material? Could you anticipate something?
HellLight: We are now waiting for the release of the new album; I think it´s going to be released in the second half of September. It´s a great album. We worked really hard on it; I hope everyone enjoys it as much as we do. We have released the first single of this album as a lyric video on youtube, and the reviews were great, it´s called “Distant light that fades”.
To be honest, we already have enough songs for the next album, that we´ll probably start recording in the middle of next year, let me know how you like our new album Journey Through Endless Storms.
Felipe: How was working with the Russian label Solitude Productions? It's a pretty major label, working with other important bands in the world who also play Doom. Have you felt that the label Solitude Productions recognizes its history and importance?
HellLight: They are an amazing label, they work really well. We have fans all around the world because of their range. It´s amazing to work with people that loves your art as much as you do, we are very proud to be part of their cast.
Sometimes they give us some tips and hints about the records, which is great, we do need it sometimes. They are more experienced then us, so, we do listen to what they have to say.
It´s a two way street, they bet on us and we bet on them.
Felipe: What has changed in your life after nearly 20 years of musical career? Changes in your families, with immense and diverse technological advancements, seeking HellLight solidly establish in your country and on the global scene, seeing how society changes, politicians and governments and HellLight prevails.
HellLight: Live in a third world country is definitely not easy; we get thru a lot, in 20 years many things have changed. The governments fucks up a lot around here, so, it´s not easy to keep everything on track with those kinds of problems, however, we kept the band alive. I guess only love can explain it. We lost many people, parents, friends along the way, but I believe, when something is part of your soul, it survives anything.
Felipe: Thank you very much for your time and interest in wanting to participate in the interview. This space is for you to say goodbye or make a personal reflection. All yours.
HellLight: Thank you for this space, I always like to say that, the metal scene, in every country of the world, are not made only by the bands, but the press, the fans, the record labels, the metal record stores. The radios, etc. It´s all part of the same thing, so, let´s keep it alive, keep in contact with us. We love to meet our fans around the world, hope you enjoy our new album and, hope to see you guys on tour. Doom on!
